Measuring body symmetry is an essential part of postural care, it tells you about where you are starting and guides you to know what and how much needs to be done. Measurements carried out before you start or change elements of your postural care routine, such as a new wheelchair or bed positioning, can be used as a baseline to measure success, be that the body shape becoming more symmetrical or staying the same.
The measurement process is gentle and systematic and involves using simple tools. The process has been validated so that it can be relied upon to give a true indication of change over time.
The assessment will take around 1.5 hours and at the end of the session we will be able to give a numerical value to indicate the symmetry and shape of the ribcage and the movement of your hips and pelvis. These values can show what needs to be focussed on in the 24hour postural care plan and also support why a certain approach could be indicated.
Having a starting point can be used to support the purchase of equipment such as a lying support system or a change in wheelchair seating.
